Corporate Identity Theft on Rise
Kroll, the global risk consultancy company, warns British businesses to protect themselves from the risk of identity fraud. Corporate identity theft is on the rise, with companies at risk of bogus companies being set up in their names.

Employees can potentially be more of a threat to an organisation than an outsider as they readily have access to sensitive data. A fluid workforce with an estimated 1.2m temporary workers going out on assignments in a typical week makes rigorous screening of all employees, subcontractors and intermediaries a critical element in preventing identity theft.

Toni Sless, ID theft manager at Kroll, commented: “Many people just think of identity theft as an issue that affects individuals; however, more and more UK companies are falling victim to data theft. It’s an issue that really can’t be ignored as it can ruin a company’s reputation with its customers and stakeholders and can result in a significant loss of business.

“It really is essential that companies know who is handling their data. Businesses need to conduct due diligence checks with any party who has access to their data – this includes all temporary staff and contractors, and any third party providers and intermediaries too.
